Today, 7 billion people inhabit the Earth, and this number is expected to reach 8.3 billion in 2030 (Source: UN, World Population Prospects: The 2010 Revision). With the population increasing globally, the world shares the common issue of food resource sustainability. Ajinomoto Group's booth at the Japan Pavilion of Rio+20 will introduce the following initiatives to deal with this issue under the slogan, "Good eating = Green eating."
Ajinomoto Group has been operating in Brazil, the host of Rio+20, for more than 50 years. The world's largest producer of sugar, Brazil has become an important production base for the umami seasoning AJI-NO-MOTO®, feed-use amino acids and other products that Ajinomoto Group makes using the raw sugar extracted from sugar cane as a raw material. Ajinomoto Group currently has four production sites in Brazil, including the Laranjal Paulista Plant in the state of São Paulo, which produces AJI-NO-MOTO® from sugar cane. The byproducts of the manufacturing process are sprayed on the sugar fields as fertilizer as part of a bio-cycle that promotes the cultivation of the next crop of sugar cane, thus contributing to regional development. Ajinomoto Group conducts similar programs in nine other countries. In 2012, Ajinomoto Group invested JPY 1 billion to introduce a large-scale biomass boiler that uses bagasse (crushed sugar cane residue remaining after the extraction of juice) as fuel. Ajinomoto Group expects it to supply 70 percent of the plant's steam and reduce annual CO2 emissions by 24,000 tons while establishing a bio-cycle that makes the most effective use of local resources (please refer to the chart on the following page).
