In Cambodia, due to an imbalance between the number of children (approximately 50% of population is under age 15) and classrooms, schools operate using a two-shift system in the morning and afternoon to alleviate the shortage of classrooms. There are also cases where some schools operate under a three-shift system. In addition, there are quite a lot of ramshackle school buildings in Cambodia. To facilitate the active attendance of children and promote leaning, Ajinomoto provides support toward opening schools and the donation of school buildings.
Additionally, as a remnant from the days of Pol Pot, there are quite a few children's books in Cambodia. However, most children are not able to read a book even if they learn to read and write characters. Therefore, Ajinomoto is providing donations for library wings and additional funding for library books, whereby children can read books on a daily basis and learn to enjoy reading.
We recognize that the donation of school buildings is a very significant and meaningful activity on behalf of children as a place where they can have educational opportunities such as literacy education in order to learn to live independently with dreams for the future, as well as a means for the Cambodian people to be able to develop the country by their own initiative.

Organizers provide assistance to rural areas by instilling self-reliance through various activities, including household vegetable and fruit gardening, nutrition improvement, training in plant cutting and grafting techniques. A total of 73 persons, including 43 women, participated in 10 training sessions conducted in 10 villages in 2001. Eleven families among these participants were able to reap a good harvest and sell the surplus crops at markets.

Co-sponsored 8th Angkor Wat International Half Marathon 2003 (Ajinomoto Co., Inc.) |
As a result of past wars, Cambodia has lost many middle-age people who play a vital role and serve as a valuable asset in leading the country. To rebuild the nation, there is a pressing need for the comprehensive educational and human resource development of the young and junior leaders who will serve as the backbone of the next generation of Cambodia. Under such circumstances in which there is large upsurge in juvenile delinquency, it is very important to create a healthy environment and provide support for sports and physical education programs to young people as a means of aiding a national policy for which physical education is not yet firmly established. Based on this philosophy, Ajinomoto group has supported the Executive Committee which has done an impressive job of implementing various coaching clinics and recreational activities for youth, as well as acting in concert with the intent of promoting mutual understanding between Japan and Cambodia through helping to support the advancement of local sports and physical education programs.
